SIXT Foundation rebuilds JAM day-care centre

New classrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, toilets and play area for children

Mahou Day Care Centre

November 2015 - One of First Car Rental's CSI projects, JAM SA, found a new benefactor in First Car Rental's international car hire partner, SIXT rent a car, who are based in Europe.

The SIXT Foundation recently donated 39 000 Euros (approx. R592 000) towards the extreme makeover of the Mahou Day Care Centre, a non-profit in Orange Farm, Gauteng. The project was facilitated by JAM SA's European division, JAM Switzerland.

The Mahou Day Care Centre is one of the Early Childhood Development (ECB) centres supported by JAM SA's nutritional feeding programme. Founded in 2011, the Mahou Centre started out with just 11 children but has grown to house over 40 kids daily. Every day, all 40 of the children are given a 50g portion of JAM porridge in the NGO's signature Red Bowl, providing them with 75% of their daily micro-nutrient requirements. But the centre was unliveable.

The Makeover

The extreme makeover, costing R720 000, began in early September 2015, with JAM volunteers working tirelessly to finish the revamp by early October.

The makeover included:

• A brand new kitchen and cooking facilities

• Three newly built, brightly-decorated classrooms, a new sickroom and an office

• New toilet facilities for teachers and children

• Day-care accessories including Eva mats, educational toys, books, tables and chairs, bag rails and blankets

• A new shaded grass outdoor play area with a jungle gym, scooters and a mini-race track

• A new vegetable garden

Said David Brown, Managing Director of JAM South Africa, "JAM South Africa is immensely appreciative of the large funding received from the SIXT Foundation. This donation from SIXT has done so much more than the eye can see. It allows us to make a difference in the lives of these pre-school children and is a major contribution to their education. The extreme makeover will set the Mahou Day Care Centre on the path towards compliance with the Government's health, safety and educational requirements. This will greatly improve the ECD Centre's chances of becoming eligible for Government Grants, so as to further expand its positive impact on the community and improving children's lives."
