2. Discover Paarl at Your Own Pace
One of the best parts of a self-drive trip? You decide where to stop, how long to linger, and when to veer off the beaten path.
Main Street Meandering
Paarl’s Main Street is one of the longest and most beautiful in the country, lined with oak trees and Cape Dutch buildings. Stop in at a corner café, browse an antique store, or snap a photo of the iconic Strooidak Church.
Vineyard-Hopping, Your Way
Some of South Africa’s most celebrated wine farms call Paarl home. Visit historic estates like Nederburg, then swing by boutique wineries like Ridgeback or Vondeling for a more intimate tasting experience. With your own car, you can create a route that suits your palate—and your pace. Just remember to elect a designated driver!
The Afrikaans Language Monument
Perched above the valley, this architectural landmark offers 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains and vineyards. The short drive up is worth it for the scenery alone, but the monument also makes for a great picnic or photo stop.
3. Bring an Appetite
From rustic farm stalls to polished restaurants, Paarl knows how to feed its visitors well.
Farm-to-Table Restaurants
Try places like Noop or Faber at Avondale, where menus are built around local produce, seasonal ingredients, and perfectly paired wines. Lunch can easily become a two-hour affair—especially if there’s dessert involved.
Market Stops
If you're in town on a weekend, check out the local farmers market for everything from artisanal cheese to handmade crafts. It’s a great spot to stock up for a wine farm picnic or relaxed evening back at your accommodation.
Picnic on the Mountain
Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve is a peaceful escape, with easy access by car. Bring along a blanket and enjoy a laid-back lunch surrounded by boulders, fynbos, and fresh mountain air.
