Merrell Hobbit Journey and Trail Runs 2016

Roam free in the indigenous forests of the Amathole Mountains near Hogsback in the Eastern Cape.

Merrell Hobbit Journey

Hogsback is a magical place located on the western edge of the forested Amathole Mountain range. The village is overlooked by mountains and surrounded by indigenous forests that are centuries old. It is only an hour and half drive from Grahamstown, yet may as well be in another world.

The beauty of the surrounds is said to have inspired J.R.R Tolkien to write the Lord of the Rings trilogy, so you can imagine the dramatic splendour of the place.

The Merrell Hobbit Journey and Trail Runs is a weekend event (29 April 2016 - 1 May 2016) for the whole family that allows people to explore this beautiful area. There are four distances on offer: the two-day, 90km Merrell Hobbit Journey and 38km, 16km and 5km trail runs.

The 90km staged trail run starts on the Friday and takes runners on a demanding journey along the Amathole Hiking Trail through the indigenous forests and up to Cata Mountain. Here runners rest for the night and continue on the next morning, passing cascading waterfalls and across crystal clear streams while enveloped in glorious vistas, and no small amount of sweat, to finally descend into Hogsback. The 90km trail is certainly one for the bucket list.

The 38km trail is shorter and offers immense variety of terrain and challenges to test runners. The 16km and 5km routes are neither flat nor easy, but very doable and see a mixture of racers and casual runners all loving the magical vibe of the forest along well marked routes.
