Signature Motorsport team gunning for the title

November 2016 - Signature Motorsport again dominated the Engen Volkswagen Cup results with Chris and Matt Shorter each taking a race win at the 7th round of the series held at the new Kyalami Circuit on Sunday, 23 October this year.

Chris Shorter (#33 Payen) just edged out his title rival Keagan Masters (#18 Champion) in a thrilling 8-lap race that went undecided until the second last corner of the race, heading a Signature 1-2-3 result, with Matt completing the podium.

In race 2, Matt Shorter (#11 Champion) started from pole position but Shaun La Reservee got ahead at Turn 1. Matt put his head down and chased La Reservee down, making a stunning late-braking move at the start of the final lap to take the lead. In a twist of fate a movie-writer wouldn't think possible, La Reservee retired seconds later with a blown motor, allowing Chris into the runner-up spot.

Standings going into the final round of the Engen VW Cup

1. Matt and Chris Shorter earned 1st and 2nd place on the overall time sheets and really shook up the championship standings with one race to go

2. Brad Liebenberg (#12 Ferodo) still leads the championship chase, but now only has a 4 point lead over Chris.

3. Keagan Masters (#18 Champion) is third in the standings, eleven points further back after retiring in race 2 when the car went into limp mode after being hit by a rival.

4. Matt moves into 6th spot, while Jurie Swart (#39 Ferodo) is in 8th place.

Jurie Swart had a solid weekend after a hesitant start in free practice. Qualifying saw an 8th place slot and he made up a couple of places to end 6th in race 1. A great start in race 2 saw Jurie up to 5th but missing gears saw him tumble to 7th, before clawing back lost ground to end 5th.

The championship deciding final round of the VW cup is at Zwartkops Raceway on 25th November.
