The process has not been finalised, but plans are in place for the passport to be available within 3 to 12 months.

According to the Department of Home Affairs media liaison, Thabo Mokgola, the internal processes relating to child passports has not yet been finalised, and that the requirement for unabridged birth certificates still stands.

The proposed children's passport, which will be issued to children fifteen years old or younger, will include full details of both parents and would replace the need for carrying an unabridged birth certificate.
