FlySafair launches two new routes along East Coast

June 2017 - First Car Rental's exclusive flight partner, FlySafair, has announced that they will be launching new routes between Durban's King Shaka International Airport and East London Airport, as well as King Shaka International Airport and Port Elizabeth Airport

The first flights will take off on 27 November and tickets are now available for sale through FlySafair's website.

The launching of these routes comes in the wake of a survey conducted by FlySafair to determine public demand for several potential routes.

The winner, with 54% of the votes, was the Cape Town - Nelspruit route, however, FlySafair selected to launch the routes that came in second and third place - Durban to East London and Durban to Port Elizabeth, for business reasons.

Says Head of Sales and Distribution at FlySafair, Kirby Gordon, "Public appetite for a new route is a major consideration factor but there are some key factors that fall into place, including utilisation of aircraft and crew and slot compliance."

Airlines look at three main factors when choosing to launch a new route:

  • • Demand to Capacity Fit
    • FlySafair operates Boeing 737-400 and 737-800 aircraft which have either 165 or 189 seats. For a route to be economically viable, there needs to be a minimum of 140 people willing to fly on each flight offered.
  • • Efficiency
    • One of the most critical factors running a low-cost airline is to maximize the available flying hours of both the aircraft and the crew. The right movement patterns that allow for maximum flying, while ensuring that crew sleep in their own beds.
  • • Take-off and Landing Slots
    • These slots are all scheduled very carefully and competition for the slots between airlines can be intense as everyone needs the specific slots they want to match their utilisation patterns.

"Looking at all these factors, the Durban to East London and Port Elizabeth links are the ones that made the most business sense," says Gordon, "the interest in the Cape Town - Nelspruit route is very encouraging and we'll certainly keeping looking into that one too."
